Awake from the Dream
A Play by Irene Javors, Kimberly Vasallo, and the Dreamers of Today
Dreamers at the Precipice is a psychological ensemble piece composed of dreams gathered from ordinary Americans, the inspirational life of Charlotte Beradt, and her work The Third Reich of Dreams. Inspired by the playwrights’ clinical work during rising totalitarianism, the play highlights parallels between Nazi-era dreams and those of today. This act of political resistance, and living historical archive, brings to light the terrible times we live in. Paired with projections to act as a “chorus,” the play confronts what happens when history repeats, and dreaming becomes indistinguishable from waking reality. Audiences are left with a sense they have moved through oblivious denial, and into a place of optimistic movement forward. This play is a necessary lens into our increasingly polarized and violent world, and it proposes an answer to the question – Is action possible at the edge of collapse?
This play blossomed out of our personal need to resist the fascist takeover of our minds, through art and witnessing of the current moment. Now we hope to bring that resistance to larger audiences, through this important political awakening drama. Much of the theatre being staged today is a reflection on the past, and this play stands boldly in the current moment.
